MALA TEMPORA CURRUNT
2021
For flute, bass clarinet, violin, viola, cello, and piano.
8' ca
'Mala Tempora Currunt,' which translates to 'Bad Times Are Upon Us,' is a title that perfectly describes the current global situation: surprising harmonies, with sections that reference Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring,' are the main features of the piece.
The flute in the extremely high register, played fortissimo, creates an unsettling and almost painful sound for the ears. A two-note figuration constantly mutates throughout the entire piece, in a continuous variation. In this work, I have experimented with different approaches, expanding my compositional technique through the use of quasi-aleatoric sections, more indefinite pitches, extended techniques, and microtonal passages.
The structure consists of four parts treated differently in terms of dynamics, timbre, and chromaticism. In the end, I tried to 'invert' the sound that characterizes the beginning by utilizing the resonance of the piano.

In this piece, I tried to represent swarms from different perspectives. The phenomenon of a swarm has a unique identity, an entire entity generated by a large number of small entities, each contributing to create a "broader picture." The composition can be primarily analyzed from two aspects: from the outside (a panoramic view) as well as being immersed within it, where each small cell (motif and melodic line) makes a difference. A few motivic lines, mainly semitonal, are treated in contrasting ways and in different sections through various figurations. A heavy overall orchestration is the main characteristic of the piece, contrasting with thinner and lighter sections, as if zooming in on specific areas of the swarm.
Note: The term "swarm" refers to a group of small entities (such as insects or birds) that move together in a coordinated manner.

"A Blizzard" is a piano piece, a representation of the harshest and toughest climate of the Tropic of Cancer, especially in the Russian region. I wanted to translate into music the main characteristics of the Siberian winter: like in a toccata, the fast notes running across the piano register resemble strong winds, along with sudden thematic fragments emerging from the snowstorm. Structurally speaking, the piece resembles a song form with an introduction, seen as the "calm before the storm," although the harmonic structure (based on permutations of a harmonic field) and the dynamic development suggest the inevitable: towards the end, the hail unleashes its weight on strong and sudden chords, recreating moments of intense uncertainty.
A series of triplet figures in catabasis leads to the end of the piece, like a snowstorm that suddenly fades away without leaving anything behind.

"Mal di Terra" is a journey represented in a four-part opera, focusing on the vast and complex world of Sicilian culture, a complexity that primarily manifests in its folk music. This culture is imbued with Greek and Arabic influences: the presence of the "friscaletto" or scacciapensieri (known as marranzano in Sicily), handcrafted instruments characterized by uncertain intonation, the use of melismas and ornaments in Arabic music, and the creation of songs based on Greek modes create a complex potpourri, rich in nuances. I have sought to unite the past and present, blending folk tradition with contemporary classical music. Passion, violence, love, desire, and nuances of human behavior are represented through musical "modes" reminiscent of Messiaen's limited transposition techniques, along with interventions of electronic music.

"Glitches" is an orchestral piece written in memoriam of Claude Debussy and Gioacchino Rossini in 2018, the 100th and 150th anniversaries of their respective deaths.
It involves a deconstruction of some iconic works by the two composers, such as selected preludes by the French composer and quotations from Rossini's "Petite Messe Solenelle," scattered unevenly throughout the orchestra.
The term "Glitches" refers to the sudden entrances of the various quotations contrasting with a harmonic field based on 5 notes (B, D, Eb, F, Gb) and their numerous intervallic transpositions. The concept of glitches is also examined from other perspectives; in fact, obsessively repeated embellishments, vigorous vibratos, and excessive wha-wha effects imitate the strange effects produced by electronic audio/video sources like digital audio files or disturbances from digital television transmissions.
Note: "Glitches" refer to unexpected malfunctions or disruptions, often found in digital technology or electronic systems.

A piece dedicated to Georgi Tsenov, a virtuoso percussionist; a highly challenging composition that relies on fast and aggressive motifs, enriched with slow and polyrhythmic sections; a sense of anxiety persists throughout the piece, representing in my mind the apocalypse of Nordic culture, the Ragnarok.

"Sacreology" is a term I coined, a kind of "study of The Rite of Spring," one of my favorite compositions, composed by my idol, Stravinsky, to whom I dedicated the piece in memory. I wanted to merge my style, ideas, and language with quotations from the famous ballet, attempting to capture the power, the wild flavor of one of the most iconic pieces in the history of music.

A mixed quartet characterized by a constant "bellowshake," a technique used to mimic objects in rapid apparent motion, objects that keep moving continuously but in place, without a specific direction or purpose, frozen. Figures like trills, followed by rapid fluttering, emphasize this "false movement," supported by strong detached accents produced by the flute and marimba, and by muffled sounds and effects produced with the slap tongue technique by the bass clarinet, highly effective in its lower register.

TURRITA NITRICULA
2016 rev. 2018
for flute
10' ca.
Turrita Nitricula is the transliteration from Latin of a type of jellyfish, Turritopsis Nutricula.
This animal is the only living being capable of reversing the process of cellular degeneration, thus reverting to its embryonic stage and becoming virtually immortal. The piece is therefore structured to be played in reverse. Characterized by aggressive, fast, and sudden figures, the composition aims to mimic the movements of the immortal jellyfish, with significant dynamic variations, contrasting sections, and quarter-tone changes, reminiscent of the indefinite movements of the cnidarian.
